SRI CHINMOY

A Lifetime of Service for World Peace

  27 August, 1931 – 11 October, 2007

Internationally renowned peace leader SRI Chinmoy, who had been nominated by Archbishop Desmond Tutu and seconded by former Soviet leader President Mikhail Gorbachev for the  Nobel Peace Prize for 2007, devoted his entire life for the cause of world peace and international understanding. He was held in the highest esteem throughout the world for his more than forty years of visionary and unstinting work for world peace.

Sri Chinmoy’s work for peace embraced the whole of human life, inner and outer. Sri Chinmoy implemented new and creative ways to instill values of peace, on the practical level with total commitment and enormous, untiring energy. Sri Chinmoy offered his peace service to millions of people from all nations and cultures for over three decades. He was a poet, an author of essays, a composer, an artist, a sportsman, and a lover of humanity. He never stopped in his efforts to reach out and build friendship between individuals and between nations, and was devoted to the principle that the good in people and countries must be seen and appreciated. His poems, other writings, songs and paintings are inspired works manifesting a spirit of peace and also profound insight into the values and practical methods of transformation on which peace must be founded. The sheer abundance of his creations is amazing, providing a vast reservoir of sustenance for people seeking wisdom and strength.

Hailed as a modern day renaissance man, Sri Chinmoy wrote over 1600 books of prose and poetry, composed over 21,000 pieces of music, played over 777 Peace Concerts in venues like Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall and was an avid runner, tennis player and champion weightlifter. He has offered hundreds of lectures in every state of the United States and throughout the globe at such distinguished universities as Harvard, Yale, Oxford, Cambridge and Tokyo. At galleries worldwide, including the Carrousel du Louvre and UNESCO in Paris and the Russian National Museum of Decorative Arts, selections of Sri Chinmoy’s paintings and 16 million “Dream-Freedom-Peace-Bird” drawings have given joy and inspiration to countless people.

Through his personal example Sri Chinmoy, had touched the lives of millions of people and had brought them a message of hope and love.

Rare indeed is the individual who applies himself in such a wide range of creative activities and who is so prolific in each. Rare still is the individual who offers his inspiration, aspiration, and dedication so widely, so freely and so frequently to the public in so many world venues. Sri Chinmoy’s life will always stand with the great figures of the past who have worked tirelessly for the goal of world peace and human unity.
